RAID Recommendation for Redundancy

Hi colleagues,
For a project requiring higher data protection, I’m configuring RAID on a Hikvision NVR.
Would RAID 5 be sufficient, or is RAID 6 recommended for improved fault tolerance in surveillance environments?

As a general guidance:
RAID 5
1 disk fault tolerance
Good balance of storage and redundancy

RAID 6
2 disk fault tolerance
Recommended for larger arrays or critical installations
For evidential-grade systems, RAID 6 is typically preferred.

RAID 5
  • Minimum HDDs required: 3
  • Provides 1 disk fault tolerance
  • Offers a good balance between usable storage capacity and redundancy
  • Suitable for small to medium-sized installations where moderate fault tolerance is acceptable
Usable capacity formula:
(Total number of drives − 1) × Drive size
Example:
4 × 10TB drives → 30TB usable


RAID 6
  • Minimum HDDs required: 4
  • Provides 2 disk fault tolerance
  • Recommended for larger disk arrays
  • Strongly advised for critical or high-availability installations
Usable capacity formula:
(Total number of drives − 2) × Drive size

Example:
6 × 10TB drives → 40TB usable
