Hello everyone,

My recorder keeps resetting the system date back to the 1970s after a reboot or power loss. What is causing this?
Thank you!

Dear member,

If your recorder resets its date to the 1970s (typically January 1, 1970), this is almost always caused by a failed CMOS battery.

The CMOS battery maintains the internal clock and BIOS settings when the device is powered off. When the battery is depleted, the system loses its time reference and defaults back to the Unix epoch (1970).

Required Replacement:

Hikvision recorders commonly use a:

  • CR1220 CMOS battery
Replacing the CR1220 battery should resolve the issue.

Important Notes:

  • Power off and unplug the recorder before opening the unit.
  • Replace the battery with the same model (CR1220, 3V lithium coin cell).
  • After replacement, power the unit back on and manually set the correct date and time.
  • It is also recommended to configure NTP synchronization to prevent future time drift.
If you are unsure about opening the recorder, consult a qualified technician.

Please let us know your recorder model if you would like confirmation before replacing the battery.
